August was a big month for innovation and bold moves in sustainable packaging. Here’s a quick but detailed roundup of what’s making waves:
🏉 Notpla + Allianz Stadium
Allianz Stadium became the first major UK venue to pilot a fully plastic-free drinks carrier – shaped like a rugby ball! Designed for stadium service, it gives fans a smooth way to carry their pints without plastic. This is just the latest in their eco-shift, following seaweed-lined trays, disappearing chip forks, and more. Allianz Stadium is truly leading the way in sustainable sport.
🌱 Xampla’s Morro™ Coating Goes Big
Morro™, a plant-based, plastic-free barrier coating, is now widely available through Bunzl UK & Ireland’s massive network. It’s already hitting restaurants, hotels, transport hubs, and stadiums, offering a sustainable replacement for fossil-based packaging.
🍦 Huhtamaki’s Ice Cream Revolution
Huhtamaki has launched compostable and recyclable ice cream cups, made with responsibly sourced, bio-based materials. Plastic content is under 10%, proving sustainability can look good (and taste sweet!).
🪵 Stora Enso + Novapor: Papira® Foam
Stora Enso introduced Papira®, a recyclable cellulose foam, in a pilot project with Novapor Nordic to protect luxury mirrors. Goodbye plastic foam, hello wood fiber innovation!
🥛 Ocado + Polytag: Smarter Recycling
Ocado is scaling UV-tagged packaging to make recycling transparent and traceable. Invisible to shoppers but scannable at facilities, these tags track when and where packaging gets recycled – a major step toward a circular economy.
💌 That’s a wrap for August! We’ll be back in September with more stories shaping the future of sustainable packaging. Have questions or ideas? Drop me a line at alex.moore@Pakka.com.
